W.W. Newberry founded Simpson University in Seattle Washington in 1921, which moved to its current Redding, California location in 1989. The school was named after a famous Presbyterian minister, Albert Benjamin Simpson (1843-1919), who pioneered Biblical teaching during the late 19th century by founding the Christian and Missionary Alliance.
In the beginning, Simpson University only offered a 2 year program. Its mission at the time was to prepare Christians for a life of service overseas as missionaries. Today, the original ideal of cultivating a Christ-centered life remains, but in an expanded context to meet the spiritual and educational needs of the modern Christian. Alumni serve as ministers and lay professionals.
Mission/Vision
The founders desire to deliver the gospel of Christ to the world still remains the focus of Simpson University. This ideal remains as strong as when the institution was first founded, and Simpson University remains committed to providing a learning community that is Christ-centered.
In the 1950s, the college created a logo that stated its primary mission to serve as a gateway to world service. The vision of Simpson University is to be a Christian student’s place of choice when it comes to learning how to live a Christ-focused life. It seeks to develop the mind of its students, as well as strengthen faith and reinforce character, preparing them for a life of spiritual works and faithful service in an ever-changing world.
